Exploring GSS Heritage

On Labor Day 2014, GSS members and visitors were able to view the newly installed Ebenezer tour signs.  Those with Smart phones enjoyed trying out the QR code innovation on each location. The three Germanic societies’ members in the Savannah area, The German Friendly, the German Heritage, and the Georgia Salzburger Society met in Savannah’s City Hall, October 2, 2014 to accept a framed copy of a proclamation from Mayor Edna Jackson of Savannah, declaring October 6, 2014 to be German-American Day in Savannah.

Monday, October 6, 2014, the three Germanic societies in the Savannah area, (The German Friendly, the German Heritage, and the Georgia Salzburger Society) assembled in Orleans Square in Savannah to celebrate pride in our German heritage. Members of each group enjoyed congenial conversation and German influenced refreshments catered by the “Schnitzel Shack” from Effingham County. Because it proved to be an enjoyable evening, everyone expressed an interest in making this an annual event.

Both of these celebrations proved to be opportunities to promote the importance of GSS membership. Brochures on GSS history, tour opportunities, and membership were displayed encouraging interest in joining and volunteering, to continue GSS goals of education, genealogy, and tourism at Ebenezer.
